This morning I posted my review of Jack Levison’s Inspired: The Holy Spirit and the Mind of Faith. At the end I mentioned that one area of the book that I want to explore further is the idea of “inspired interpretation” or “inspired exegesis”. Well, this afternoon I received a very timely gift from Paul Bruggink: Kevin L. Spawn and Archie T. Wright’s edited volume Spirit and Scripture: Exploring a Pneumatic Hermeneutic, which has a favorable blurb from Levison on the back cover.

Spawn and Wright are Pentecostal scholars from Regent University. The book contains a variety of essays proposing ways to think through the subject of inspired exegesis, or, as they call it, “a pneumatic hermeneutic”. There are responses written by Craig G. Bartholomew, James D.G. Dunn, and R. Walter Moberly. I’m excited to dive into this book!

I want to thank Paul for this gift as well as a couple classic volumes he has gifted to me recently—Humphrey Prideaux’s 1836 two volume The Old and New Testament Connected in the History of the Jews and Neighboring Nations from the Declesion of the Kindgdoms of Israel and Judah to the Time of Christ and the second volume of Ambrose Serle’s 1815 edition of Horae Solitariae: or, Essays upon Some Remarkable Names and Titles of the Holy Spirit Occuring in the Old and New Testaments, and Declarative of His Essential Divinity and Gracious Offices in the Salvation of Men. I will cherish these remarkable books as part of my library!
